JAKARTA: Indonesia is viewed as Japan's most important partner in investment among other countries of Southeast Asia which tend to be oriented to China.In addition, in Japans perspective, Asean will be a global economic driver in the future, Director General of Development of Industrial Zones at Indsutry Ministry Dedi Mulyadi said.Based on Japan's independent research team, Indonesia is seen as the greatest and the most important partner to be Japan's investment target in Southeast Asia compared to Malaysia, Singapore, Philippine, and Thailand.Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, and Philippine seem to more focus on China, he said after attending a meeting of Vice Minister of Industry Alex S. W. Retraubun and Osaka Governor Toru Hasimoto, yesterday.Then, the positive perspective can build a momentum for both countries to attract more investors from Japan.Indonesia has Masterplan of Acceleration and Expansion for Indonesian Economic Development [MP3EI] program, but they havent been realized yet. Nevertheless, Osaka Governor promises to boost Japanese investment to Indonesia including in environmental friendly technology sector.Moreover, MP3EI is expected to protect Indonesia from deindustrialization trap. The programs focuses on providing additional values to natural resources so as to accelerate growth of processing industry in Indonesia.Japans competenceIn the meantime, Japan has competence to participate in acceleration program, including in manufacturing sector as well as in providing necessary infrastructure.At least, Osaka Prefecture-based 13 companies have constructed their factories or even plan to expand their business in Indonesia.They are Sanyo (optical pickup production), Keihin Corp (carburetor manufacturing), Panasonic (LED lamp production), Daihatsu Motor, Daiki Alumunium, Exedy Corp, Dunlop, Slix Corp, Yasunaga Corp, Sumitomo Rubber, Kohnan Shoji, Nippon Shokubai, and Ajinomoto.Meanwhile, Japan also sent 21 Japanese entrepreneurs to investigate investment opportunities in Indonesia. So far, there is no concrete commitment yet from the first meeting.Nevertheless, Japan has communicated its interest in port construction in Cilamaya, Karawang, West Java because most Japanese-industrial centers are located in the region.(T01/NOM)
