JAKARTA: PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN)-- state electricity company-managed to increase the energy power plant to 88.2 terawatt hours (TWh) during the first semester of 2011, or it was up 6% over the same period last year.On the other hand, from the use of fuel, coal became the largest contributor to both plants owned by PLN and independent power producer (IPP) by 19 million tons. The use of fuel was up 12% compared to the same period in 2010.Director of Primary Energy at PLN Nur Pamudji expressed that the company is optimistic that electricity production may increase by 180 TWh until the end of the year along with the achievement during the first half of this year."The contribution of coal use along semester1 was not maximum. Some 10,000 MW power plants like Indramayu, Apex, Lontar, Suralaya-8, and Tanjungjati from mid to the end of first half was not satisfying," he said last week. However, Nur added that the use coal in the first half of this year will increase because the plant will be begun to fully operate in the second half of this year.In the first half of this year, coal contribution as fuel generator was 43%.Of the five energy mix in PLN, the two down generator energies are gas and water. The use of gas, both owned by PLN and IPP plants only reached 163 tera Btu (British thermal units), or was down 7% compared to the same period last year amounted to 176 tera Btu.According to him, PLN will get additional gas from as much as 65 billion Btud from Jambi Merang Field to PLTGU Muaratawar through the swap mechanism with Conoco Philips gas which flowing to Chevron.Until today, the use of coal was 45 million tons. Meanwhile, gas was 344 TBTU and fuel was about 9 million kiloliters. "With such energy mix, we expect electricity production could reach 180 TWh by the end of this year."Security coalWith regard to the security of coal, Nur said that PLN has completed negotiations with a number of suppliers such as PT Arutmin, PT Kideco, Kaltim Prima Coal, Adaro, Berau Coal, and PTBA.The price referred to a benchmark price of coal (HPB) in fourth quarter of 2011 or based on Decree of Energy and Mineral Resource Minister No.17/2010 and No.617/2011.Separately, Director General of Oil and Gas at Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources Evita Legowo said that the government is now seeking gas supply that comes from the mine mouth of the coal gasification in Jambi and South Sumatra to meet the needs of PT Chevron Pacific Indonesia."We will commercialize coal gasification at 150 MMscfd for the CPI. Anyway, later it will be built near the mine mouth thus the coal distribution will not be expensive," he said. With the use of coal gas, natural gas that had been supplied to the CPI could be diverted to other consumers, particularly to electricity generators. She explained that the coal gas project is a bilateral cooperation between Indonesia and Japan. The use of coal gas, as she explained can be enjoyed in 2015 since the government is conducting a feasibility study for the use of coal gasification. The need for coal was estimated at 5,000 tons to produce 150 MMscfd gas. (14) (t03/msw)
