JAKARTA: Canada-based BlackBerry handset producer, Research In Motion, RIM is ready to open an aggregator communication network or node in one of the Asean countries which are expected to significantly push down the BlackBerry tariff.Minister of Telecommunication and Information Technology Tifatul Sembiring said the RIM node which will be built in South East Asia will significantly reduce the tariff of BlackBerry services. "So the responses in social media which said that we are harming BlackBerry users are not true since we only want to protect them," he said on the sidelines of a meeting with Commission I of the House of Representatives today.Meanwhile, RIM has not yet decided the country to place the node. RIM, as Tifatul said, has agreed to admit requirements to open 40 service centers in Indonesia. The service centers will be checked by the ministry of telecommunication and information technology.The demand to apply lawful interception, as Tifatul said, RIM expressed its readiness to coordinate with law enforcement officials. He said his ministry has asked RIM to build data centers as mandated on Information Transactions Act No. 11 /2008. However, last year RIM bided to build to the level of repeaters to allow authorities to conduct lawful interception or if there are suspected crimes including corruption. Unfortunately the ministry saw that RIM has been stalling the execution.The eradication of pornography related to the deadline on January 21, 2011, as Tifatul said, has been followed up by RIM which immediately implemented a meeting this afternoon with six local providers,"We give a deadline to unblock the porn content on January 21, we allow them to make profits but they still have to respect the laws and regulations which applicable in Indonesia," he said.Related the pornography issue, the legal agreement has reached and RIM has stated its commitment on the issue.According to Tifatul, the results of today's meeting decided to run the command of Commission I of the House of Representatives on June 16, 2010 about pornography in software or hardware to prevent the internet content that violates the law and Healthy Internet program.Tifatul said that historically RIM was a research firm that has a highly sophisticated expertise in the field of encryption and data compression. The company charges between IDR150.000-IDR120.000 and takes US$7-US$8 per customer for its services. "According to our calculation, RIM has 3 million subscribers, of which 2 million are legal subscribers and the rest of 1 million are illegal. But all subcribers are legal to RIM and they get IDR2.3 trillion per year, whereas the infrastructure to support the service of BlackBerry was built by the 6 local operators, said Tifatul.The other request which is also submitted by the government to RIM is a requirement to open a branch office in Indonesia, to absorb local workers and to optimize the use of local components working with Indonesian developers.RIM already opened a new branch office namely PT RIM Indonesia in last November 2010, and currently have started an investment in the field of software development by involving local application software developers and University of Indonesia.
