The 63 years of independence Indians have enjoyed lead the 1.5 billion population to reap the success in wide-ranging areas. From economy to politics, you name it, and India secures just eminent roles in various international forums. World Trade Organization (WTO) or East Asia Community (EAS) are just some of the 'playing fields' where the country stands up to be one powerful nation in comparison to developed countries.A light talk with an executive from India's Larsen & Toubro Limited in early August this year confirmed this successful path India has built to secure the state of welfare and equal chances for every one in the country."It is democracy that has brought us to this phase," said Mr. R.N. Mukhija, Larsen & Toubro's member of the board and President (Operations), to Bisnis. It is a choice as an independent nation to choose democracy as a way of life. And, it is the choice itself that gives the Indians a freedom of expression evolving through the years, through the political life, education, economic activities, and finally shaping the nation as we see today.I still remembered, in a chance of visiting India in the end of May 2010, an aircraft incident sparked an Indian airline crews strike since they had not been allowed to unveil any information related to the incident to the media. They defended their rights to speak and it gained wide respect. The spirit of democracy of the Indians is also carried out in the international negotiations where it involves. See what happens to the talk of Doha Development Agenda (DDA), a prolonged multilateral trade negotiation whose declaration intends to place developing countries needs and interests at the heart of the Work Programme. India has been the most anticipated country as it struggles to secure domestic agricultural sector while at the same time fights for opportunity for the industrial products to win markets in developed countries. The pride of the nation also raises its confidence to make unbelievable breakthroughs in sectors like aerospace, health, and information technology, in spite the fact that the country desperately needs more efforts to provide adequate infrastructure and poverty to eradicate and improves its political life.Above all, recalling to what happened yesterday in Bali Democracy Forum, we saw how countries support each other to realize the democracy at their utmost efforts. The question remains how we can benefit the democracy to promote better welfare to the citizens, particularly those living away from the administration center, and how we can ensure every one enjoy the life of being an independent nation in the respected country.I guess to some extent we must agree to what President said that democracy is not something you can put in force. But I think, he just missed the word choice when he said it. Democracy is a choice, and it is the choice that leads, one of which, India to be a giant country today.
