New investors seek opportunity to develop broadband

JAKARTA: The development of broadband infrastructure, proposed through National Broadband Plan together with the launching of Master Plan for Acceleration and Expansion of Indonesias Economic Development (MP3EI), last week, is projected to open opportunities for the entry of private investors.National Broadband Plans concept predicts new investment will reach IDR96 trillion-IDR169.5 trillion for several of needs such as backbone construction, data center and device procurement.Executive Chairman of Indonesian Infocom Society (Mastel) Taufik Hasan stated the concept is expected to create sharing opportunities between government and private.On the program, government is represented by PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia Tbk (Telkom)It is considering that private telecommunications operators that exist today tend to build in areas that are considered economically feasible, especially in big cities, with a focus more on mobile services.While Telkom, as the provider of mobile and fixed service, will continue to develop such as through National Through Broadband Access including 6 Indonesias economic corridors and also as a way to enlarge market share particularly at economic centers in rural area such as plantation and mine.Telkoms step to construct home pass network through National Broadband Access could complete the needs of broadband infrastructure in this country.Telkom started the construction of 18 million home pass amounted to IDR21 trillion on May 27, 2010, together with the launching of MP3EI, and targeted to complete in 2015.Home pass networkHead of information and Public Communication Center of Ministry of Information Gatot S. Dewa Broto stated the home pass will be connected with fiber optic backbone network infrastructure that was built through the Palapa Ring project that connects the islands throughout the archipelago along 50,000 km.Vice Chairman of Native Indonesian Entrepreneurs Association (Hippi) Wawan Setiawan stated broadband infrastructure is absolutely needed along with the rapid development of information and communication technology.The development conducted by Telkom is the solution when other telecom operators are still conducting economically unfeasible investment, especially in remote areas such as Eastern Indonesia.However, the government is also expected to be able to stimulate the acceleration of the adoption and development of information and communication technology at all levels of society to encourage other operators to improve and expand their services.
