JAKARTA: Through June, PT Bank Rakyat Indonesia Syariah has disbursed IDR750 billion financings through pawning product, increasing by 16.09% from IDR646 billion in the same period in 2010.The performance of pawning seemed buoyant in several areas having the culture of saving gold, like in Padang and Pekanbaru, said BRI Syariah Head of Product Development Maryana Yunus.The increase is also fostered by sponsorship programs and publications of the product, he said yesterday.Pawning is providing finance for customers with gold as collateral.Launched in 2009, the product offers maximum pawning period of 120 days, which is extendable.Regarding the achievement in the first half of the year, the state controlled bank targets to disburse as much as IDR1 trillion through the product this year, doubling the achievement last year.Precious metalIn the meantime, through another product - gold ownership product (KLM) - launched last month, BRI Syariah has tapped 500 customers with total funds IDR15 billion.KLM product could obtain such achievement, as people want to buy gold with installment method, said BRI Syariah Chief of Retail Banking Khairullah.The performance was also supported by our 78 offices that provide the KLM product, he said.Precious Metal Ownership (KLM) is a financing product for retail consumers wanting to buy Antams gold and local gold bars.BRI Syariah offers financing for gold, starting from 10 gram up to 12.5 kilogram within the period of 6 months to 15 years.KLM is a transaction based on Islamic principles, featuring sale and purchase agreement and insurance during installment period, with premium the same as the value of the gold.Most customers apply for financing gold as much as 25 grams and within 24 months and 38 months, according to Maryana.Some customers apply for financing gold more than 1 kilogram and installment up to 15 years, but the number is so small, he said.KLM product is now available only in certain areas in Indonesia and may spread to other areas gradually.When the product was launched in June, BRI Syariah Presidnet Director Ventje Rahardjo targeted KLM would collect financing at IDR500 billion this year.
