Yahoo! & Nokia develops local content

JAKARTA: A number of multinational companies in telematics, such as Yahoo and Nokia are aggressively working on local multimedia content to enhance the penetration of its business in Indonesia.Country Manager of Yahoo! Indonesia Pontus Sonnerstedt said surfing behavior in Indonesia which growing very well has opened opportunities in cyberspace business. Thus, Yahoo! are doing some strategies to strengthen its business penetration in Indonesia."One of them is through the development of local content, such as Koprol or services in Indonesian languange," he said yesterday.Pontus admitted the company will be more aggressive to work on the entertainment market because it saw an opportunity to make it a successful market.It can be proven from the launching of Yahoo! OMG last year which have been a booming site as a unique event Indonesia.Besides, Yahoo! as a news aggregator website will be fully utilized, particularly to provide news in Indonesian language.Internet trend in Indonesia which is centralized in social networking sites is also used as Yahoos one strategy. Koprol was acquired a year ago as Yahoo tried to bring the local nuance in their service.Pontus also added that there is a possibility to hold local companies in making such content.The ecosistemCountry Manager Nokia Indonesia Bob McDougal said the cell phone producer is driving the growth of creative industry activity and development of local applications, by forming the Nokia Developer The Ecosistem that will connect businessmen and market.Nokia ecosystem is built through a collaboration with community and individual application developers of all levels, as well as large mobile operators.According to him, until now Nokia has support 10,000 application developers in Indonesia through more than 40 seminars workshops and competitions in 10 cities, which has produced more than 1,000 local applications are available Nokia Ovi Store."Through this ecosystem, we are committed to advancing the national telematics industry, by providing and developing talented entrepreneurs to enhance the industry and business application development in the country," he said.Director General of Informatics Application at Ministry of Communication and Information Technology Aswin Sasongko said IT-based creative industries such as local content and application developers need to be encouraged along with Indonesia Connected program launched by the government.Within the program, the government is building a fiber optic network infrastructure to the user (last mile) which will connect all villages in Indonesia by the international community.(22/Arief Novianto) (t03/msw)
