JAKARTA: Global automotive industries still wait and see for investment in the development of low-cost and eco-car in Indonesia considering that there is no clarity of regulation.So far, several Japan-based great principals have communicated their interest against illustration of the governments regulation, informed by Director General of High Technology-Based Superior Industries at Industry Ministry Budi Darmadi.Totally, the investment potency can be calculated to more than US$1.4 billion.Even, Daihatsu is predicted to allocate US$400 million for investment, while Suzuki and Nissan will also invest US$800 million and US$200 million each.The investment is only allocated for procurement of production machines and assembling plants, excluding for research and development of low-cost and green car. At the same time, several principals coming from China and South Korea excluding Japan have similar interest for investment but still wait for regulations certainty.On the other hand, several brand-holder agents (APM) of Daihatsu and Suzuki have been aggressive in exhibit a concept car that will be a future of a low-cost and eco-car in an event of 19th Indonesia International Motor Show 2011.In addition, President Director of PT Hyundai Mobil Indonesia Djongkie D. Sugiarto said that whole principals are interested to participate in the governments program on low-cost and eco-friendly car, but are still waiting for the regulation.He also revealed that the regulation on low-cost car in Indonesia is tighter than the regulation in Thailand.So, every principal that has interest to participate should commit with technology-transferring regulation as power train and engines including assembling, machining, and casting. The policy has engaged all input of stakeholders and has been discussed for 1-2 years. Government wants for Indonesia to be independent country in a term of technology, he said.To be developed soonSuzuki Motor Corp has planned to fulfill all requirements for development of low-cost and eco-car in Indonesia, when the government releases a policy on the program in the near future.Suzuki has a great interest to develop the concept car considering great potency of the segments market in Indonesia, confirmed by PT Suzuki Indomobil Sales Managing Director Seiji Itayama.The car market in Indonesia is still dominated by a 1,500-1,800 cc-machined car, while a small car market, having relative cheap price and 1,000 cc machines, is less than 30% of car market.Having similar plan, Toyota Motor Corp is also waiting for governments decision on the car program to develop a special model for Indonesias market.Toyota Motor Asia Pacific President Hiroji Onishi asserted Toyota will consider seriously to work into low-cost and eco-car market in Indonesia.The management needs to consider requirements, including limit of vehicles gas emission and local content level.(t01/msw)
