JAKARTA: PT ASDP Indonesia Ferry accelerated the purchase of two ferries with a capacity of 300 vehicles from October to August 2011.Port Director of PT ASDP Indonesia Ferry (Persero) Prasetyo B. Utomo said that the company will soon open the bid of the ship procurement.The auction is open for any foreign and domestic companies. The company required all bidders to be able to provide ferries which are suitable with the condition in Merak and Bakauheni port.According to him, the company needs a ferry with a capacity of 150-200 vehicles or even bigger than that.We also want the ferry to have 12 knot speed, he told Bisnis, yesterday.So far, the traffic from Java to Island is always full since the load capacity of ferry has significantly increased.In the last one week, the queue of vehicles in Merak and Nakauheni has reached to 94th KM of Merak toll road.In the beginning ASDP said it scheduled the ferry purchase in October 2011. Those ships will be bought to increase the load capacity of ferries.Three shipsPT ASDP Indonesia now operates three units of ferry in Merak Bakauheni. They are Jatra I, II and III, while foreign companies have 31 ships with total capacity 3,585 vehicles from all types.With new ships, the company expects the total load capacity of its ships may increase by 10%.But it depends on the availability of the ships.Meanwhile, the queue in Merak-Bakauheni was still happened 2 KM outside Merak port. But this condition was better than last week which caused a traffic jam from 94th KM of Merak toll road. (t03/msw)
