Motorcycle sales up 10.75%

JAKARTA: Motorcycle sales in Indonesia broke the record of 709,077 units in May, growing by 10.75% compared to 640,234 in the same period last year.However, the sales last month showed less difference compared to that of April at 709,199 units.Based on preliminary data from a member of Indonesian Motorcycle Industry Association (AISI), Honda still led the market of the two-wheeled vehicle in home with sales of 377.157 units.Behind Honda, there were Yamaha with sales 281,925 units, Suzuki with 39,851 units, Kawasaki with 7,578 units, and TVS with 2,179 units. Meanwhile, the data from AISI did not report the sales of Kanzen.Of the total motorcycle sales last month, automatic scooter dominated the market with sales of 351,443 units, followed by cub type with 299,727 units and sport with 57,907 units.Honda motorcycle during May 2011 recorded significant growth, mainly for automatic scooter and sport segment.We see that there is a little decline in cub but not too significant, around 4,000 units. We think that it is normal. Meanwhile, automatic scooter has rapid growth because the consumer needs in the segment is high, said Sigit Kumala, Senior General Manager Sales Division at PT Astra Honda Motor.In the meantime, Sigit mentioned that the distibution of motorcycle in May was considered stagnant and similar to that of April. However, retail market last month was better than the previous month.Although there was no exact number, he said that retail sales in May could grow by more than 10%, compared to that of April.Sales in May reached 39,790, in which cub contributed the most, said Setiawan Surya, GM Marketing Two Wheels PT Suzuki Indomobil Sales.Yamaha reaches targetSales of Yamaha motorcycle in May was 281,925, reaching the monthly target of 281,925.Sales in the last two months were lower than that of March, which touched 318,386 units. In April it fell to 286,179 because people in some regions allocated their expenses for academic needs, said Eko Prabowo, GM Promotion and Motor Sport at PT Yamaha Motor Kencana Indonesia.The decline before new academic year is an annual cycle, but in some regions sales is still high so generally it meets the target, he explained.Eko expected that motorcycle sales would return growing before in July fasting month and Ied el Fitr celebration.
