The most anticipated event in the citys international community calendar, Jakarta Highland Gathering, now returns, even bigger and better than ever. The fun day in the sun celebrated by Jakarta expatriates and residents alike will be back this year on Sunday, May 29 at the Imperial Klub Golf, Lippo Village, Karawaci.
Jakarta Highland Gathering is an annual charity festival based on the traditional Highland Games in Scotland that was founded by Gordon Benton, OBE in 1975. Under the patronage of Governor of The UK Ambassador to Indonesia, H.E. mr. Martin Hatfull, Jakarta Highland Gathering brings together thousands of expatriates and locals from all ages and cultural backgrounds. Mr. Hatfull expressed his delights to be associated with the Jakarta Highland Gathering, stating that this unique event is not only a great celebration of Scottish culture, tradition and sports, but also a fantastic day out for the family, and a chance for all Jakartans, whether Indonesian or foreigners, tourists and residents to get together for a really different experience.
Last year, Highland Gathering saw almost 6,000 people through the gate, making it the largest Highland Gathering in the Southern Hemisphere. Thanks to the generous support from sponsors, the net proceeds raised from the event in 2010 were donated to Yayasan Pendidikan Dwituna Rawinala (School for the Blind) and the charity efforts of the Gathering will continue this year with five nominated charities as its beneficiaries, including Yayasan Wisma Cheshire and Yayasan Balita Sehat.
For the first time ever, Jakarta Highland Gathering together with British Chamber of Commerce and British Council have organised a community development program themed Giving Kids a Sporting Chance. This program held a day before the Gathering will provide free sport coaching for hundreds of deserving Indonesian children in various fields of sports including the very British sports of football, rugby, and cricket. This initiative is an effort to provide Indonesian kids the opportunity to learn and enjoy a fun and healthy sporting experience. Other activities that compliment the Highland Gatherings charity program include JHG Charity Golf Tournament on 25 May and Scotland in Concert charity gala dinner on 27 May.
Jakarta Highland Gathering will feature the best of Scotland its country and highland dancing, pipes and drums, and the popular Heavies acts such as caber toss, shot put, and weight over the bar. Simultaneous competitions and shows will also take place, including team sporting competitions such as volleyball, rugby, futsal, Tug oWar, and cultural performances from around the world. The grand finale will feature the tradition of Uphellya (Burning of the Viking Boat), cultural shows, and spectacular fireworks.
The Main Arena Coordinator of Jakarta Highland Gathering, Shona Benton says Highland Gathering is about music, as well as sport, and this year we expect over eight bands from around the Pacific rim competing for quintets, piping and drumming awards. Bands from Australia, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Singapore will lead the parade as a massed band of nearly 50 musicians.
For the whole day, visitors can enjoy special promotion deals from numerous corporate exhibitors, shop for unique merchandise at the Pasar Skotlandia Bazaar, and indulge in a wide array of food and drinks available at the Food Festival Area serenaded with live performances. Meanwhile, the children can get entertained in endless fun and educational activities in the Kids Area with giant trampolines, bouncy castles, magic shows, and outward bound activities for teens. The venue opens at 9am and finishes with the fireworks show at 6pm.
