JAKARTA: Yogyakarta Volcanic Investigation and Technology Development Institution (BPPTK) had lowered Mount Merapi status from stand-by to alert but it still does not recommend climbing the mountain.

We have lowered the status but it doesnt mean the mountain is safe enough for climbing, said Head of (BPPTK) Sri Sumarti in Yogyakarta, today.Secondary hazard, she continued, includes possibility for great lava flow that may occur due to heavy rain, thus endangering climbing activity. She informed that volcanic material deposit still fill all streams flowing from Mount Merapi. The unit also asks people who do Lava Tour to stay alert since the tourist site is included in disaster-prone area (KRB) III.KRB III is an area that was directly hit by Merapi's hot cloud and is recommended not to be a permanent residence.
