JAKARTA: The Directorate General of Air Transportation at the Ministry of Transportation has issued extra flight permits to nine national and foreign airlines, with the total passenger capacity reaching 39,448 passengers.

Such a capacity increased from 21,090 roundtrip route passengers or 10,545 one-way passengers last year for domestic routes. Nurmaria Sarosa, the Head of Corporate Communication at Mandala Airlines, revealed the people's interest in flying overseas was indeed steadily increasing approaching the yearend. "In reality, people want to take a vacation overseas as well as domestically. On domestic level, the favorite route right now is Jakarta-Denpasar route," Nurmaria informed yesterday. Data by the Ministry of Transportation showed Mandala has 20 extra flights for Jakarta-Hong Kong route (10 roundtrip flights), with the total passenger seats reaching 3,600 passengers. Mandala uses Airbus 320 airplane to fly the route. The extra flights are given for period December 27, 2010 - January 5, 2011. Nurmaria added the airline would also increase roundtrip flights for Jakarta-Singapore route to three times a day from the current one time a day starting December 25, 2010. "Afterwards, we will fly Jakarta-Singapore route three times a day starting early next year. We will also fly Jakarta-Hong Kong daily from the usual four times a week, thanks to the extra flight." Passenger service President Director of PT Indonesia AirAsia Dharmadi estimated the airline would find its number of passengers surging 20% during the yearend holiday compared to the normal months. Dharmadi admitted AirAsia flight tickets for December had been fully booked. "So far, the average load factor has reached 80% per flight," he told Bisnis yesterday. President Director of PT Angkasa Pura II Tri S. Sunoko disclosed the flow of passengers at Soekarno-Hatta (Jakarta) airport during Christmas and New Year holiday was estimated at 1.919 million passengers. "The number of passengers is estimated to increase 15% from 1.66 million passengers during the yearend holiday last year. Therefore, we estimate the number of passengers will increase by 250,349 passengers this year," he concluded. (18/wiw)
