JAKARTA: Bank Indonesia reported that financing in Indonesian shariah banks increased by IDR16.10 trillion this year through October (year to date/ytd) to IDR62.99 trillion from IDR46.88 trillion at the end of last year, boosted by three financing segments, i.e. credit for working capital, investment and consumption.

Credit for working capital grew by IDR7.56 trillion to IDR30.43 trillion, while credit for investment increased by IDR2.61 trillion to IDR12.57 trillion and credit for consumption rose by IDR5.92 trillion to IDR19.98 trillion. Director of Shariah Banking in Bank Indonesia (BI) Mulya E. Siregar admitted that consumption credit gave the biggest contribution to the total shariah financing. "Consumption credit in shariah banks is quite big. It includes credit for housing and vehicles. But we also encourage shariah banks to boost working capital segment by targeting to credit for franchise," he said today.Based on BI data, gradually the portion of credit for consumption by shariah banks has improved in the last one year. Meanwhile, the portion of credit for working capital and investment reduced although the value increased. BI reported that the credit for consumption in October last year was 27.4% of the total financing from shariah banks, increasing to 30% at the end of 2009. In September 2010, the portion of consumer credit grew to 31.4% and it continued increasing to 31.7%. In the meantime, the portion of working capital reached 51.3% in October last year and it decreased to 48.8% at the end of 2009. In September 2010, the portion of working capital credit shrank to 48.7% and it continued declining to 48.3%. Director of Business in BNI Syariah Bambang Widjanarko said that the opportunity of consumer credit remains high. BNI Syariah targets the growth of consumer credit to be 50% next year. "The opportunity of consumer credit is still big. The market is positive. We believe that next year all kinds of credit will grow 50%, including financing," he said. He revealed that through November 2010, the bank has disbursed consumer credit as much as IDR1.65 trillion. "Housing loan [KPR] still dominates the consumer credit with 70%," he said. (t04/wiw)
