JAKARTA: US President Barack Obama urged Department of Defense to prepare any necessary measures and regulations, thus, he can sign the new policy concerning the military gay. In the previous regulations those military members turning out to be gays are not allowed to declare themselves as one or known as Dont Ask, Dont Tell.I directed the Department of Defense earlier this year to begin preparing for a transition to a new policy, said Obama. As citing from the official website of The White House, Obama also highlighted his strong support to the military gay revelation as it walks in line with the American principles of fairness. Prior to this, Obama has pledged to repeal the previous regulations, forbidding those military gay from declaring themselves.I have pledged to repeal the dont ask, dont tell law because it weakens our national security, diminishes our military readiness, and violates fundamental American principles of fairness and equality by preventing patriotic Americans who are gay from serving openly in our armed forces, Obama added. The president also expects that after the signing of the new policy, the transition process shall be conducted with responsible manners, from unit of cohesion to recruitment and retention to family readiness, resulting in better military strength and national security. The strong urgency did not only address to the Department of Defense but also the Senate particularly in easing the signing process of such policy. As previously acknowledged, there has been an ongoing debate over the repeal of this policy in the senate. For the first time in 17 years since the law was first enacted in US, both the Secretary of Defense and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of United States have publicly endorsed ending this policy.
